Day One: A Grouch is Born.

You know, it’s probably not fair to myself or anyone around me that I’ve decided to jump back on the keto bandwagon and quit smoking on the same day. Add in the fact that our boy is home from school and starts college in the fall, and our oldest girl moved out a few short months ago and is starting college a semester late, AND the youngest is 13 going on I-hate-everything.

I have a feeling I’m going to need some serious zen time very soon.

For anyone else starting Keto like me (again), I do have a few recommendations:

  1. Drink more water. Oh? You already doubled your water intake? DO IT AGAIN. Seriously, just drink more water. This gets easier if you keep some cold in the fridge, have a faucet filter or have some kind of additive. (I KNOW most sugar-free sweeteners are bad for me, but if it’s the difference between drinking 3 glasses of water a day or 20…I’mma do it.)
  2. Salt! I know, I know, too much sodium is bad for you, but with all the water you’re inevitably losing, you’re going to need it. Try some bone broth or just sprinkle your morning eggs with sea salt (my favorite is this one that’s already ground fine and is just under 20 cents an ounce).
  3. Add more fat! Not just any kind of fat, of course, but good fats like avocado or coconut oil are going to save you.
  4. Forgive your inner grouch. Remember, your body and brain are being sugar-starved and will want to do anything necessary to get more sugar in there. You.Must.Resist. After a few days the cravings should subside and it won’t suck as much.

How about you? What do you do to help deal with starting keto/keto flu?
